When leaning over the panoramic swimming pool on the terrace of the Savoy Saccharum Resort & Spa we are met with an unmistakable feeling of holiday calmness. The turquoise blue sea extends until the horizon and knows no barriers. However, one also cannot miss the sheer slope which perfects a dramatic landscape like few other places in the world.

Exploring this link between the sea and the mountains was possibly what the duo of Madeiran architects Roberto Castro and Hugo Jesus had in mind when they designed Saccharum. Inaugurated in April, the hotel with 175 rooms, 6 suites and 62 apartments has set a mark in the hotel sector in Calheta and many have praised the architectural work.

The hotel is a sum of creative solutions, design and good taste. The building is nestled into a cliff as if it were an extension of the basaltic rock itself. The architects also used parts of the ruins of a former sugar cane factory, one of the several used during the twentieth century in Calheta that got lost in history.

A few remaining pieces of that era, such as one or two parts of a wall and more importantly the sugar cane, which is the theme of the hotel, were the main point of inspiration for the architecture and interior design by award winning Madeiran designer Nini Andrade Silva.

The minimalistic décor replicates the different shades of green of the sugar cane and the coppery-brown of the sugar cane syrup, creating a relaxing environment. There is a small museum recollecting the work carried out at the factories which produced honey and firewater. The theme inspired the name of bars and restaurants like Alambique, Engenho and Trapiche.

Saccharum is a strong latin word which ties in with the architecture of the hotel based on square angles, strong lines and above all, plenty of space. The magnificence of the lobby is a perfect example. But the rooms, suites and apartments are ample, comfortable and full of details. The lighting is pleasant and the combination of architecture and interior design appear to have created the perfect symbiosis.

However, the sea is also a dominant feature. This link isn’t limited to the view of the panoramic pool, on the terrace. Most of the rooms have an ocean view which can be enjoyed from the comfort of one’s bed.

Saccharum also has another outdoor swimming pool and another one for children in addition to a pebbled beach. Besides that, there is an exquisite indoor swimming pool complete with a sauna, jacuzzi and Turkish bath. Other wellness amenities include a Spa, massage centre and a fitness club.

This is resort designed for holidays where families are welcome, though some areas are designated for adults only. There are plenty of bars and restaurants as well as a range of services intended for a carefree vacation.

Aside from a resort this is also a design hotel, full of hidden corners and details, with areas resembling scenic spaces. The combination of factors makes Saccharum a kind of hybrid which brings together the best of several worlds!
