MIUT is Madeira’s largest ultra-trail competition and keeps on breaking records
Once again, registration closed shortly before the opening time. In its 11th edition, the Madeira Island Ultra-Trail once again achieved record numbers of participants. A total 2,600 athletes, of 52 different nationalities, will be running through Madeira on April 27th.
Organised by the Funchal Mountain Club, the competition involves passing by the highest spots on the island. The race crosses the totality of the island, from northwest to southwest, from Porto Moniz to Machico, and walks through some of the region’s most famous trails comprising a circuit with a total 115 kilometres.
The trail is divided into four races: MIUT (115km), Ultra (85km), Marathon (42km) and Mini (16km), all of them in a linear non-stop format.
The competition is held every year and is a part of the Ultra Trail World Tour.
This year it will see 1359 foreigners run alongside 1241 Portuguese nationals. Most foreigners hail from France and Spain.
The youngest participant is 18 years old and the oldest 75. Of the total competing athletes, 650 are women and 1,950 are men.
MIUT, the longest race, takes off during the night, from the town of Porto Moniz, at exactly 12 a.m., on April 27th. The common goal of all the races is the town of Machico.
