A flying museum

Madeira Airport’s terminal has a new museum space: Hangar.

This is a space called “Hangar, airport memories” and it is the Madeira Airport’s most recent accomplishment. In this hangar, instead of a parked airplane, one can find the airport’s memoires.

This year the airport is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its first landing strip that serves the Madeira Archipelago’s main island. To mark the historic date, a small space was created that displays both a commemorative 50th anniversary exhibition and some of the Madeira Airport’s most important moments.

The museum also displays a few objects that were key to the Airport’s development: old electric signalling plates, the airport’s first uniform, a picture of the first fire fighting squad to serve the airport, several historical documents that show the evolution of the airport’s image, its certificates as well as the awards granted to the airport, and so on. The old board that used to keep track of the airport’s departures and landings can also be found there.

The Hangar opened to the public on September 15th and it’s a free entrance exhibition. Visitors can find the museum on the ground floor.
